Colston Bassett Dairy is celebrating after their Blue Stilton was crowned Best Cheese in Show at the 2017 Newark & Nottinghamshire Christmas Primestock Show and Sale. The cheesemakers also took the top spot in the Traditional Stilton category.
Judges Messrs, John Gent and James Sealy from Newark Agricultural Advisory Services sampled an impressive line-up of entries from local and national producers. As is tradition at these regional awards, the entered cheeses were then sold at auction with proceeds being donated to farming charities.
Colston Bassett Dairy was established in 1913 and takes pride in using traditional cheesemaking methods. This includes hand-ladling the curds which guarantees the finest quality cheese. These annual awards recognise the labour-intensive processes that Colston Bassett employ to ensure the smooth, creamy consistency of their multi award winning Stilton.
Judge James Sealy said: “Nottinghamshire is home to some of the best and oldest names in the cheese world, including Colston Bassett, who produce unique cheese day in, day out. The quality and taste of their Stilton is a result of the traditional cheesemaking methods they practice. The Newark Christmas Primestock Awards highlight the outstanding quality of local cheeses, and bring Christmas home to Nottinghamshire.”
Billy Kevan, Dairy Manager, comments; “We are delighted to end the year with this brilliant accolade. These Awards help to place Nottinghamshire firmly on the cheese map which is particularly valuable at this time of year, when everyone is preparing for the festive period and planning their Christmas cheeseboard.”
